SMO Energy

Homeowners often find it difficult to know when it is time to repair vs. replace their current home cooling system. Typically, when your air conditioner or heat pump is 10 years or older, it is time to start researching the potential benefits of replacing your HVAC system. SMO Energy has checked in with some experts, and here is what we found to help you make the decision of whether to replace or repair your home’s air conditioner or heat pump:

Consider the Age
The average lifespan of an air conditioner or heat pump is about 15 years. Some can last longer depending on certain factors such as yearly maintenance and regular filter changes. However, when something goes wrong with your cooling system, you should consider the $5,000 Rule as recommend by Angie’s List; “Multiply the age of the equipment by the repair cost, if it exceeds $5,000, then replace the unit. If less, repair the unit.”

Lower Your Energy Bills with Energy Efficiency
Your heating and cooling system is one of the most used appliances in your home. Given the technological advancements of heating and cooling systems today, upgrading to a system that is more energy-efficient could cut your yearly energy bills up to 50 percent, depending on the efficiency upgrade. Energy Star recommends upgrading your cooling system to an energy-efficient unit if your current central air conditioner or heat pump is 10 or more years old.

Adding More R-22 Refrigerant to Your Unit Might Mean it’s Time for a New Unit.
When your unit needs more R-22 refrigerant, it’s a sign of a coolant leak and most likely means you need a new air conditioning system. Why is this a problem? Government regulations have mandated manufacturers no longer use R-22 refrigerant in air conditioners and now use a refrigerant called R-410A. The regulation is also the sunsetting production of R-22, with all production of R-22 to end in 2020. This means every year there are fewer R-22 produced, which increases the price per pound.

Full System Replacements vs. Air Conditioner Only.
Homeowners with heating and cooling systems that are both 10 years or older should consider the cost savings of replacing both systems at the same time vs. replacing the units at different times.
