Unsure of how much oil is left in your tank? If you don’t have a gauge on your tank to tell you how much oil you have left, you can ‘stick’ your tank to find out. All you need is a 6-foot stick and this oil tank chart to find out how much oil you have left.
Start by unscrewing the fill valve on the top of your oil tank. The fill valve is usually the larger of the two, and is where your delivery driver fills your oil tank. Next, use a 6-foot, clean and dry stick and slowly insert it straight into your tank through the fill valve until it touches the bottom of your tank. Be careful not to move it around too much so you don’t stir up any sediment resting on the bottom of your tank. Slowly lift the stick back out of the tank, and measure how much of the stick is wet with oil. Once you have that measurement, use this heating oil tank chart to determine how many gallons of oil you have in your tank.
