SMO Energy

HVAC stands for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. It is a reference to your home’s entire temperature control system, which can include the ductwork, thermostat, air conditioner, boiler, furnace and humidification controls.

Propane is a versatile product that provides affordable energy and reduces your carbon footprint. When it comes to adding propane to your home, it is important that propane tanks are installed according to the local laws in your area and installed with safety in mind. SMO Energy provides free in-home consultations to survey your home for safe installation, and walk you through important details about adding propane to your home.

Some oil tanks have a tank gauge that can help estimate the amount of oil in your tank. If your tank does not have a gauge or you are not sure whether it is accurate, you can also stick your tank. This means taking a clean stick, such as a yardstick or broom handle and dipping it into your tank. You can then use a heating oil tank measurement chart to convert the number of inches of oil on the stick to the approximate number of gallons of oil in your tank.

We pride ourselves on having a large delivery fleet that enables us to get you your heating oil or propane the day after you order, sometimes the same day (there is a fee if same-day delivery is required). Same day/next day delivery is subject to change should weather create unsafe road conditions.

When you use our automatic delivery service, you will not need to worry about scheduling your own deliveries. We will monitor your fuel level for you and schedule a delivery when it starts to get low. We offer automatic delivery services at no extra charge. To sign up for automatic heating oil or propane delivery, call our Client Care team at 888-222-3720.

There are many factors that determine if you should replace your HVAC system, such as how often the system is used, the system’s overall efficiency, whether or not the system is meeting your personal comfort needs, and if the system has required more frequent and costly repairs. The average lifespan of most HVAC systems is about 10-12 years if it is serviced annually. Keep in mind that a system serviced less frequently may require an earlier replacement.

All HVAC equipment has moving parts and will inevitably make some noise. Modern HVAC equipment, however, is usually much quieter than older models. Our energy experts can help you find the right HVAC machines for you if quieter operation is a priority.

If you have a replaceable air filter, you may check it monthly and change it out when it gets dirty (about every 3 months). For even better air quality and efficiency, consider changing the air filter monthly. If you have a permanent air filter, check it once a month to see if it needs to be cleaned.

It depends on the system. Often you will find a filter access door next to the furnace, in the return air duct. It may also be behind a grille installed in the wall nearby. In older systems, you may find the filter inside the furnace next to the blower motor. If you are struggling to find your air filter, call us, and we will help you locate it.

Your air conditioner reduces the temperature and humidity of your home by transferring heat from inside the house to outside. In a central heating and cooling system, your home receives cool air through the ductwork as the system removes heat from the air and sends it outside.

This is a heating and cooling system that allows you to control the temperature in individual zones of your home. Think of them as heaters/air conditioners you install in the rooms of your home where you need temperature control. You can heat or cool only the areas where you need it rather than paying to heat or cool the entire house all at once. These systems can improve energy efficiency and allow you to heat and cool your home without ductwork, as well as often being quieter than traditional HVAC systems.

While an annual tune-up is not required, it is highly recommended. A regular maintenance inspection and tune-up can locate potential problems with your HVAC system — issues you might not otherwise discover until something goes wrong. Without an inspection, a worn-out part could cause a cascading failure, leading to a much more expensive repair bill than if you had replaced the part in advance. An inspection can also make it less likely that your HVAC system will fail at an inopportune time, such as in the dead of winter. Annual inspections can significantly increase the life of your HVAC system.

SMO Energy’s annual tune-ups are quite affordable, usually take less than two hours and are included with our Service Agreements. The cost of an annual Service Agreement is usually much less than the cost of an emergency service call.

A number of factors influence your HVAC system’s energy consumption, including the type of system you have and its age. By keeping your equipment clean and operating at maximum efficiency, regular maintenance can certainly help control energy costs.

If your energy bills are very high, you should be aware that some older boilers and furnaces are dramatically less efficient than newer ones. Consider contacting SMO for an assessment of your HVAC equipment and suggestions on newer, more energy-efficient equipment you can replace it with.

Proper ventilation is critical to the quality of your indoor air. If you or anyone in your family suffers from allergies, asthma, coughing spells or other respiratory issues, poor indoor air quality could be the culprit. In addition to having your equipment cleaned annually and your filters changed regularly (at least every 3 months), consider investing in a system to purify the air that comes out of your heating and cooling systems. At SMO Energy, we offer UV lights and indoor air quality systems to help eliminate bacteria, mold and allergens in your home’s air.

Strange odors in the home can signify potentially dangerous gas leaks. Propane, for example, has an additive that makes it smell like sulfur or rotten eggs. If you notice a strange odor and think it could be a gas leak, leave your home immediately. Call the fire department first, and then call us to inspect your propane tank and equipment.

Unusual sounds or smells in the home can also indicate a faulty part in your HVAC system. If you smell or hear something abnormal coming from any of your HVAC equipment, or if you cannot identify the source of the smell or sound, call us to inspect your equipment right away.
